FORMAT

Strength Ladder

*Both athletes progress station-to-station (7 stations total), 1 minute on - 15 second transitions.

  • snatch + hang snatch complex (squat OR power are both acceptable on both lifts - bar can’t touch ground or be released between movements)

Details: Both athletes will start at station 1…3, 2, 1…one athlete will approach the barbell (this individual will be assigned “athlete 1” throughout the event for scoring purposes, and the other athlete will be assigned “athlete 2”). Athlete 1 attempts snatch + hang snatch - upon successful completion or failure (more than 1 attempt is allowed but be conscious of time), athlete 2 may go ahead with attempt. If athlete completes the snatch successfully, they get 1 point. If they then (keeping barbell above knee throughout) complete the hang snatch, they get another point (2 points available PER athlete PER each station - 14 points available for each athlete). Once an athlete is unable to successfully perform BOTH parts of the lift, they are done. Athletes will continue to progress together until both are unsuccessful (ex: if you are done, but your partner is still progressing you can stick with them to cheer them on, but you don’t lift).

Tie-Breaker: IF you successfully complete the complex at any given station, but believe you can NOT complete the next designated weight, you can opt to do a tie-breaker (totally optional). This would mean completing the snatch + hang snatch, then holding onto the barbell and doing additional hang snatch reps unbroken for tie-breaker points. Example - if you completed stations 1-3 successfully, you have 6 points total (your partner has their own score). Let’s say the weight jumps 20 lbs at the next station and you don’t believe you can get that next weight at all - you can hang onto the barbell at station 3 and rep out as many hang snatches as you can without dropping it. Let’s say you get 3 extra reps - your new score is 6.03. If another athlete you’re competing against also completed stations 1-3 but did not get tie-breaker attempts, their score would be 6, so you would place higher based on those extra reps. Now…in the event that you progress to station 4, and surprise yourself and get the snatch but fail the hang snatch, your tie-breaker reps are irrelevant and your new score is 7 (1 point for that one good rep). Tie-breaker reps do NOT apply unless you successfully compete both elements and hang onto the barbell for extra reps (you can’t have tie-breaker points if you don’t complete the entire snatch + hang snatch).

THAT WAS A LOT OF VERBIAGE BUT IT’S REALLY FAIRLY SIMPLE - PROMISE.

Questions we anticipate:

Can we go back and forth with attempts (ex: athlete 1 goes but fails, so athlete 2 tries and succeeds - can we go back to athlete 1 for another attempt)?

  • yes, but before you attempt the lift you must clearly state to your judge “ATHLETE 1” OR “ATHLETE 2” to avoid confusion - your assigned title is based on the order you chose to lift at station 1 (after station 1 you can go in any order you want as long as you announce your athlete number)

Let’s say I successfully complete the snatch, but fail the hang snatch - if I get the chance to attempt again do I only have to complete the hang snatch?

  • no, you are required to complete the entire complex without the barbell being set down or dropped below knees

If I clear the ladder do I win?

  • not necessarily - tie-breaker reps will determine the overall winner, so if you make it to the last barbell and complete your complex, we suggest hanging on and doing as many additional hang snatch reps as possible

My partner gets points, and I get points (14 available per person) - are they combined for an overall score for the event?

  • no. once athlete 1 is designated, their score will be placed against all other “athlete 1’s” - and “athlete 2’s” will all be placed against each other (this event has 2 totally separate scores/places - each counts as it’s own event so it’s like 2 events)

If I catch with bend in my arms can I press out?

  • Although we prefer a good clean snatch, we get it. You MAY press out but ONLY if you catch the barbell above the top of your head (if you catch in front of your face it’s already a no rep - don’t bother pressing out)

hang snatch: rep comes directly from snatch and begins ABOVE top of knees - athlete pulls and catches rep (MUST be caught above head), rep is complete when athlete shows full extension of knees, hips and arms simultaneously SHOWING CONTROL (do NOT bring down for any tie-breaker attempts before showing control)

tie-breaker hang snatches: rep comes directly from full complex completion and ALL REPS must remain/begin above top of knees - athlete pulls and catches rep (MUST be caught above head), rep is complete when athlete shows full extension of knees, hips and arms simultaneously SHOWING CONTROL
