Strength Ladder

*Both athletes progress together, station-to-station (7 stations total - only 1 barbell at each station, so weight for both lifts are the same at each station), 1 minute on - 15 second transitions. Please note that lift(s) must be COMPLETED at the 1 minute mark - you can not begin or finish after that time.

  • 1 rep max thruster

  • 1 rep max snatch

Details: Both athletes will start at station 1…3, 2, 1…one athlete will approach the barbell and attempt either a snatch OR a thruster (doesn’t matter which) - upon successful completion or failure (you can attempt as many times as you want but be conscious of time), the partner may go ahead with attempt. Athletes may change which lift they do at each station but only as long as both athletes and lifts are still “alive”. PLEASE NOTE THAT IF EITHER ATHLETE COMPLETES EITHER LIFT SUCCESSFULLY, THE OTHER MUST COMPLETE THE REMAINING LIFT - YOU MAY NOT SWITCH AT A SINGLE STATION IF ONE LIFT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED. ALTERNATIVELY, IF ONE OR BOTH ATHLETES FAIL, BOTH LIFTS ARE STILL “OPEN” AND IF THEY WANT, PARTNERS CAN SWITCH WHICH LIFT THEY’RE TRYING. Athletes do not need to adhere to any specific order.

Ex: Both athletes approach station 3. Athlete 1 does a successful snatch. Now athlete 2 MUST complete the thruster. Let’s say they succeed and both athletes move onto station 4. At this station, athlete 1 decides they want to try to do the thruster, but they fail a couple attempts. Athlete 2 can step in and do the thruster because the lift is still “open” AKA hasn’t been successfully complete - they succeed. Now athlete 1 is left with the snatch - let’s say they fail but are able to get in a couple quick deadlifts for a tie breaker on the snatch score. Now the snatch AND athlete 1 are “dead”. Athlete 2 can continue on with the ladder but must stick to the lift they succeeded at - in this case the thruster.

Each LIFT has its own score. If either athlete completes the thruster successfully, the thruster has a score of 1 point. (1 points available PER lift PER station, not including tie-breaker decimals - potential for 7 full points plus potential tie). Once an athlete is unable to successfully perform ALL parts of the lift, they will not lift at the next station. Athletes will continue to progress together until both are unsuccessful (ex: if you are done, but your partner is still progressing you can stick with them to cheer them on, but you don’t lift).

Tie-Breaker: If you are unsuccessful at either lift at any given station OR you believe the weight is too much and choose not to attempt the weight at all, you can opt to do a tie-breaker (totally optional). Tie-breaker reps are deadlifts which will be work .01 per deadlift. YOU DO NOT COMPLETE TIEBREAKER DEADLIFTS AFTER A SUCCESSFUL LIFT - WIT THE EXCEPTION OF THE FINAL STATION. IF YOU CLEAR THE LADDER, YOU CAN DO MAX DEADLIFTS WITH REMAINING TIME FOR TIEBREAKER POINTS.

THAT WAS A LOT OF VERBIAGE BUT IT’S REALLY FAIRLY SIMPLE - PROMISE.

Questions we anticipate:

Can we go back and forth with attempts (ex: athlete 1 goes but fails thruster, so athlete 2 wants to step in and do it)?

  • yes, but once a lift is successfully completed by an athlete the remaining athlete is locked into the remaining lift at that station (you are only interchangeable as long as both lifts are open and both athletes are still “alive”)

If I fail my lift at one station, can I stay in the ladder and just do the other lift at the next station?

  • no, once a lift is not successful, that lift AND athlete are done

If I clear the ladder do I win?

  • not necessarily - tie-breaker reps you complete at the final station will determine the overall winner, so if you make it to the last barbell and complete your lift, we suggest doing as many additional cleans as you can

The thruster has a score (7+ available) and the snatch has a score (7+ available) - are they combined for an overall score for the event?

  • no. each lift will be placed based on the point total, and both lifts will get an overall placement (essentially 2 scored events, both tying into your overall score). They will not be combined so they both impact your team rank equally.

If I pause or redip on my thruster, or catch with super bent arms on my snatch does it count?

  • no - please adhere to standards noted so you’re clear on the expectations for a good rep

STANDARDs

thruster: rep begins on the floor - athlete pulls from floor and catches rep in front rack. Athlete is permitted to squat clean to begin rep OR clean and begin thruster from standing position. Athlete descends to show hip crease below top of knee (below 90 degrees), and rep is complete when athlete ascends to shows full extension of knees, hips and elbows with control at the top and ears between or in front of arms (head through the window - do NOT bring down before showing control and judge confirming completion). The thruster movement must be smooth with no pause and no re-dip.

snatch: rep begins on the floor - athlete pulls from floor and catches rep in an overhead snatch position (power or squat are acceptable), and rep is complete when athlete ascends to show full extension of knees, hips and elbows with control at the top adn ears between or in front of arms (head through the window - do not bring down before showing control and judge confirming completion). Snatch must be caught above the top of head (a small bend then press out is fine, but if barbell isn’t above head at catch it’s a no-rep).

tie-breaker deadlifts: reps begins when athlete ascends holding barbell, and is complete when athlete shows full extension of knees and hips with shoulders slightly behind barbell (no bending of elbows on the descent - that indicates bouncing the barbell and judges will no-rep)

***YOU MUST MAINTAIN CONTROL OF YOUR BARBELL THROUGHOUT THIS EVENT - IF AT ANY TIME YOU EXHIBIT LACK OF CONTROL THAT PUTS YOURSELF OR OTHERS IN DANGER, JUDGES RESERVE THE RIGHT TO NO-REP
