Strength Ladder

*Both athletes progress together, station-to-station (7 stations total), 1 minute on - 15 second transitions. Please note that complex/reps must be COMPLETED at the 1 minute mark - you can not begin or finish after that time.

  • clean + hang clean + shoulder-to-overhead complex (squat OR power are both acceptable on the cleans - press or any form of jerk are acceptable for S2O - movements must be done unbroken)

Details: Before beginning the ladder, athletes will clarify first names with judge (and titled athlete 1 or athlete 2 - each athlete’s progress through the ladder will be tracked individually because each athlete will have their own score. Both athletes will start at station 1…3, 2, 1…one athlete will approach the barbell and attempt the complex - upon successful completion or failure (more than 1 attempt is allowed but be conscious of time), the partner may go ahead with attempt. Athletes do not need to adhere to any specific order, as long as the judge is clear on who’s going and if they’re attempting the complex or completing tie-breaker reps.

If athlete completes the clean successfully, they get 1 point. If they then (keeping barbell above knee) complete the hang clean, they get another point, and once they complete the shoulder to overhead, they receive the final point available at that station (3 points available PER athlete PER station, not including tie-breaker decimals - 1 point per lift in the complex - 21 full points total available for each athlete). Once an athlete is unable to successfully perform ALL parts of the lift, they will not lift at the next station. Athletes will continue to progress together until both are unsuccessful (ex: if you are done, but your partner is still progressing you can stick with them to cheer them on, but you don’t lift).

Tie-Breaker: If you are unsuccessful at the entire complex at any given station OR feel you may not be able to do any part of the complex at the next station, you can opt to do a tie-breaker (totally optional). Tie-breaker reps are additional cleans (from the ground each time - square or power acceptable). **Example - if you completed stations 1-3 successfully, you have 9 points total (your partner has their own score). Let’s say the weight jumps 20 lbs at the next station and you don’t believe you can get that next weight at all - you can complete additional cleans as a tie breaker option up until the 1 minute time limit. Let’s say you get 3 extra reps - your new score is 9.03. Now…in the event that you progress to station 4, and surprise yourself and get the first clean but fail the hang clean, you now have 10 points (your tie-breaker reps are irrelevant), and you’re able to complete extra clean reps if you choose to.

THAT WAS A LOT OF VERBIAGE BUT IT’S REALLY FAIRLY SIMPLE - PROMISE.

Questions we anticipate:

Can we go back and forth with attempts (ex: athlete 1 goes but fails, so athlete 2 tries and succeeds - can we go back to athlete 1 for another attempt)?

  • yes, but before you attempt the lift you must clearly state your name to your judge to avoid confusion

Let’s say I successfully complete the clean, but fail the hang hang clean/S2O - if I get the chance to attempt again do I only have to complete the hang clean and shoulder-to-overhead?

  • no, you are required to complete the entire complex without the barbell being set down or dropped below knees

If I clear the ladder do I win?

  • not necessarily - tie-breaker reps you complete at the final station will determine the overall winner, so if you make it to the last barbell and complete your complex, we suggest doing as many additional cleans as you can

My partner gets points, and I get points (21 available per person) - are they combined for an overall score for the event?

  • no. each athlete will be placed based on their point total, and both athlete’s places will be considered in overall placement (essentially 2 scored events, both tying into your overall score - if athlete 1 gets 2nd place overall, they get the team 2 points, and if athlete 2 places 32nd overall, they get 32 points). They will not be combined so they both impact your team rank equally.

If I catch with bend in my arms can I press out?

  • Although we prefer a good clean S2O, we get it. You MAY press out but ONLY if you catch the barbell above the top of your head (if you catch in front of your face it’s already a no rep - don’t bother pressing out)

STANDARDS

*Please note the complex must be completed entirely unbroken for athletes to earn all 3 points per station.

clean: rep begins on the floor - athlete pulls from floor and catches rep in front rack - rep is complete when athlete shows full extension of knees and hips PLUS elbows slightly in front of barbell, SHOWING CONTROL (do NOT bring down for the hang before showing control and elbows through)

hang clean: rep comes directly from clean and begins ABOVE top of knees - athlete pulls and catches rep in front rack, rep is complete when athlete shows full extension of knees and hips PLUS elbows slightly in front of barbell, SHOWING CONTROL (do NOT reposition for S2O before ALL standards - if your elbows don’t come through, or you don’t full stand with control before the dip for S2O, it’s a no-rep)

shoulder-to-overhead: rep comes directly from hang clean and begins in front rack position - athlete may compete press or jerk of any kind, and rep is complete when athlete shows full extension of hips, knees AND arms, head through (if you’re looking at the ceiling your head isn’t through), SHOWING CONTROL (do not drop barbell until your judge indicates thumbs up)

tie-breaker cleans: reps come from the ground each time and may be squat or power - athlete pulls and catches rep in front rack position, rep is complete when athlete shows full extension of knees and hips PLUS elbows slightly in front of barbell, SHOWING CONTROL (do not drop until you’ve completed all standards) - you may touch and go OR drop from the top and rest to compete singles

***YOU MUST MAINTAIN CONTROL OF YOUR BARBELL THROUGHOUT THIS EVENT - IF AT ANY TIME YOU EXHIBIT LACK OF CONTROL THAT PUTS YOURSELF OR OTHERS IN DANGER, JUDGES RESERVE THE RIGHT TO NO-REP
